The Magic in Creative Reuse!

Community and family events often have tables for crafting, making, and learning new skills. We love it when local businesses get creative and make an effort to use reclaimed materials, instead of buying new supplies. Just Finished: Crocheted Slippers!

In my search to find a pair of shoes that was neither petroleum based nor made from animal products I decided to try to make a pair: The slippers are crocheted with twine and yarn from the resource exchange. I’m sure they will be the first of many. We’ve got so many materials at the shop that could be used to make some reclaimed footwear that it will be be hard to stop myself from making a little series. reCreate May: Melissa Maddoni Haims

Melissa Maddonni Haims a fiber artist based in Philadelphia. She uses alternative — mostly recycled, reclaimed + rescued — materials, specifically vintage fabrics and yarn, to create large scale crochet + knit installations. While the majority of her work shows in galleries, she has a passion for public art and graffiti. She has been yarn bombing since early 2010.  Her art career began in New York City in the 1990’s, and life led her back home to Philadelphia in 2004, where she lives with her husband and their daughter.
