Making Materials Matter

As makers, we can make a lot of waste. But there are creative solutions for artists and fabricators, from sourcing more sustainable materials to diverting reusable resources from the waste stream. This week, NextFab and The Resource Exchange got together to host an open forum focused on sustainability in the arts. Local artists, organizations, businesses, and city representatives discussed the benefits and challenges of making sustainably. TerraCycle’s latest reuse projects!

We’ve written before about TerraCycle, the Trenton-based international upcycling and recycling company that collects difficult-to-recycle packaging and products and repurposes the material into affordable, innovative products. This 2013 Blog Post describes what TerraCycle does and shows how they used shadow boxes that the Resource Exchange saved from a Walnut Street Theater production to make a “museum wall” of the company’s history and products. The Resource Exchange + TerraCycle

The TerraCycle crew came to The Resource Exchange early this summer to find salvaged, unique and quirky items that could add to their offices. They left with the two giant umbrellas that we saved from The Philadelphia Flower Show, a bunch of old speakers, salvaged lauan with windows cut into it, an old women’s room door, and more! Recently The Resource Exchange team took a staff trip to visit our friends at TerraCycle in return. We went to their location in Trenton, NJ to see the building that they’ve decorated using trash and other materials that would have ended up in landfill.
