10 Years of The Resource Exchange!

Did you know that The Resource Exchange is 10 Years Old?! Starting this month and throughout the next year we’ll be celebrating 10 years of diverting creative materials from landfill! In 2009 our Executive Director Karyn Gerred founded The Resource Exchange and began our organization’s first program, reSETS, which targeted waste materials specifically generated from the entertainment industry. On the set of our first major film strike, we saved over 25 tons of the lumber with a local union film crew. The Resource Exchange + The Arden Theatre Company: Celebrating Years of Saving Sets!

In 2012 The Resource Exchange and The Arden Theatre Company saved tons of lengths of rough cut poplar and giant barn doors from their production of Charlotte’s Web. Donating the lumber to The Resource Exchange instead of sending it to landfill enabled our creative customers to reuse the wood in local projects. The barn doors were given a second life in The Philadelphia Sculpture Gym’s warehouse space, and we were thrilled when Little Berlin decided to use the poplar to build their community vegetable garden. Backdrops

Some things at The Resource Exchange are teeny tiny, and some are HUGE! Like our reclaimed backdrop materials… Staff member Alison is snowbathing here on one of our largest items, a photo printed, grommeted backdrop of a mountain landscape that is 10 x 20 feet! We also just recently received a donation of seamless backdrop paper in a variety of colors and widths of 4 and 9 feet. This paper is in great condition and is traditionally used as backdrops for photo shoots, films, and theatre sets, but could also be a handy resource for other art forms!
