The Resource Exchange + The Arden Theatre Company: Celebrating Years of Saving Sets!

In 2012 The Resource Exchange and The Arden Theatre Company saved tons of lengths of rough cut poplar and giant barn doors from their production of Charlotte’s Web. Donating the lumber to The Resource Exchange instead of sending it to landfill enabled our creative customers to reuse the wood in local projects. The barn doors were given a second life in The Philadelphia Sculpture Gym’s warehouse space, and we were thrilled when Little Berlin decided to use the poplar to build their community vegetable garden. Making Materials Matter

As makers, we can make a lot of waste. But there are creative solutions for artists and fabricators, from sourcing more sustainable materials to diverting reusable resources from the waste stream. This week, NextFab and The Resource Exchange got together to host an open forum focused on sustainability in the arts. Local artists, organizations, businesses, and city representatives discussed the benefits and challenges of making sustainably. Philadelphia Teachers Brighten Classrooms with Creative Reuse

These amazing teachers are kicking off the school year with a sustainable start! We salvage homasote sheets from movie sets, made with 98% recycled paper and wax! They’re perfect for countless classroom projects and decorations. RE customer Honora saw the potential and put the homasote to good use in her art class. “The photos were from my Art 2H class at Harriton HS. The students were practicing using watercolors.
