George Washington University: Celebrating Spring with Service & Sustainability!

This Earth Day we wanted to express our gratitude the volunteers who donate their time helping us save materials from landfill and making them accessible to Philadelphia’s creative community! We recently had an incredible group of volunteers visit from George Washington University’s Alternative Breaks Program. Their mission is to empower and challenge all students involved to understand their relationship with the global community through direct service, education, and reflection, while encouraging personal growth, social awareness, and active citizenship. Youku Kasselie: The Mandela Washington Fellowship for Young African Leaders

For the last six weeks, we had the privilege of hosting Youku Kasselie a Fellow from Liberia, through the Mandela Washington Fellowship for Young African Leaders, the flagship program of the Young African Leaders Initiative.  Youku Kasselie is a teacher who is passionate about life, and thereby works to engage communities in waste reduction by transforming materials such as plastic bottles and other materials into crafts. Youku is an entrepreneur, teacher, and social activist. She recently started Creative Arts Enterprises – an organization that transforms garbage into jewelry, accessories and other fashion items. The Art of Play and Sustainability

We were thrilled when Kara Rossi, teacher at PlayArts, contacted us to set up a visit to The Resource Exchange with their summer campers. PlayArts is a beautiful child-centered arts and play space for infants through young children located on Front Street in Fishtown. Their facility offers educational enrichment, group classes and private music lessons for children and their parents.
