Build a Community Map with the re and NextFab!
Do you live in South Kensington? Do you like making / building / painting things? Getting to know your neighbors? Learning about local businesses and organizations? Working on collaborative projects? If so, your participation is requested in a fun, unique and FREE event on Sunday, July 31st! The Community Map Build Day will provide an opportunity to learn more about the resources and opportunities that the creative institutions The Resource Exchange and NextFab offer, and to join in the collaborative creation of a large, interactive neighborhood map that will be displayed the the American Street Feast. What is the American Street Feast, you ask? It is a celebration of our neighborhood for which "neighbors and business owners, young and old, longstanding and recently arrived, along with neighborhood supporters, will share in conversation and a family style meal that displays the culinary traditions and the creative talents of those who live and work in South/Old Kensington." Hosted by South Kensington Community Partners (SKCP) with event partners LISC, Spiral Q, andPhiladelphia Photo Arts Center, the Feast will take place on American Street the evening of Friday, September 9th. Neighborhood residents are invited not only to attend the free Feast, but to participant in any or all of the public events hosted at different places in the neighborhood leading up to the Feast (including the Community Map Build Day at NextFab), during which we'll be making different elements that will be used on Feast day. Here are some key details about the Community Map Build Day: • All ages and experiences are welcome and the event is FREE!!! • The event is from Noon - 5 pm (you can come for however long you're able) on Sunday, July 31st at NextFab, 1227 N. 4th St. • Participants will be painting and assembling laser-cut pieces of a large, interactive map to be displayed at the feast. • The Resource Exchange will provide a few different types of reclaimed materials that can be laser cut and attendees will be shown how to use the laser cutter to etch a small map of South Kensington onto a material of their choice to take home with them. We'll have materials to turn the mini map mementos into magnets, coasters, keychains, or you can just display them as is! • This event will allow people to tour NextFab, a collaborative maker-space with digital and traditional fabrication tools, classes, events, and consulting services. • RSVP for this event on the facebook event page! • To volunteer, help prepare, or donate to the Feast, call 267-457-4944 or email firstname.lastname@example.org
